Nordzucker to close sugar production plant in Nakskov
Nordzucker AG has announced it will cease sugar production at its facility in Nakskov, Denmark, following the 2026/27 campaign. The decision is part of a broader restructuring effort to address structural overcapacity and intense competition within the European sugar market.
CEO Lars Gorissen stated that the move is necessary to ensure the company’s long-term competitiveness and resilience. The Nakskov site requires significantly higher investment compared to other group locations to maintain efficiency and profitability. While production will stop, the facility is expected to continue operating as a service center for sugar packaging.
The closure will affect approximately 150 jobs. This follows previous production shutdowns by the company earlier this year in Trenčianská Teplá, Slovakia, and Porkkala, Finland. The decision also impacts local infrastructure, as the loss of surplus heat from the factory will affect district heating for approximately 4,700 customers in Nakskov.
