Norfolk County Council introduces new policy for speed warning signs
Norfolk County Council is implementing a new policy regarding the installation and maintenance of vehicle-activated signs and flashing amber school warning signs. The council currently maintains nearly 650 electronic roadside signs that use radar to alert motorists to speed limits.
Under the new evidence-based approach, new signs will only be installed to address specific road safety concerns identified in accordance with the council’s speed management strategy. To manage budget pressures, the council will only assume maintenance responsibilities for new signs if a developer or third party provides a commuted sum to cover future operational and maintenance costs.
Existing signs that reach the end of their operational life will undergo risk assessments. They will only be replaced if there is a demonstrable road safety need; otherwise, they will be removed. This policy aims to provide a consistent framework for decision-making regarding road safety infrastructure.
