Norfolk hospitality businesses face rise in dine-and-dash thefts

Data from Norfolk Police reveals a significant increase in ‘dine-and-dash’ incidents, where customers leave hospitality venues without paying their bills. Reports of these thefts rose to 60 incidents last year, up from 29 in 2023.

Of the 129 total reports filed over the last three years, legal outcomes have been limited. Only 11 incidents resulted in a charge, while 69 suspects could not be identified and 33 known suspects faced no further action due to insufficient evidence.

Local businesses have reported the impact of these thefts and frequent no-shows. In King's Lynn, The Rib Cage reported an incident where two individuals left without paying a £125 bill. Near Aylsham, the Heydon Village Tea Room also reported multiple groups leaving without payment, noting the financial difficulty these incidents cause for small businesses.
