AI infrastructure spending surges as companies race to build data centers
Global investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure is experiencing unprecedented growth. Major technology companies, including Amazon, Alphabet, Microsoft, and Meta, are projected to spend approximately $760 billion on AI-related capital expenditures by 2026. This surge is driven by the demand for high-performance computing, advanced chips, and massive data center expansion.
SpaceX is reportedly planning a significant expansion, with SemiAnalysis suggesting the company could invest between $300 billion and $500 billion to reach 10 GW of AI data center capacity by 2027. To bypass traditional grid constraints, SpaceX may utilize on-site gas generation.
Market analysts provide varying outlooks. Gartner predicts global AI spending will reach $2.59 trillion by 2026. However, Gartner also warns that agentic AI could disrupt up to $234 billion of the enterprise software market by 2030 by shifting focus from user interfaces to direct outcomes. Meanwhile, Goldman Sachs estimates total global AI investments could exceed $1 trillion this year, noting that previous estimates often underestimated non-US and private sector contributions.
In the cloud sector, CoreWeave reported a 112.46% year-over-year revenue increase for its second quarter of fiscal year 2026, reaching $2.575 billion, reflecting the intense demand for AI-specialized cloud services.
