Norges Bank delays new coins featuring King Haakon

Norges Bank has stated there are currently no plans to produce new Norwegian coins featuring King Haakon. Due to low demand for physical currency, the central bank sees no immediate need to update the current coin series.

Existing coins featuring the portrait of the late King Harald or his monogram will remain valid legal tender for several years. The bank noted that the need for new coinage is assessed continuously based on circulation levels and demand.

This decision has drawn criticism from numismatic experts. Arne Riise, chairman of Oslo Myntgalleri, described the approach as ‘historieløst’ (ahistorical), noting that since the era of Saint Olav, Norwegian monarchs have traditionally been represented on the nation's currency.
