Norges Bank interest rate hike possible following new economic report

A recent Regional Network report from Norges Bank has introduced uncertainty regarding the central bank's upcoming interest rate decision. The report, which surveys leaders from over 400 companies, indicates that the Norwegian economy continues to grow, albeit without significant momentum. Businesses project production growth of 0.3 percent for both the third and fourth quarters.

Economic indicators present a mixed outlook for the monetary policy committee. While wage growth is expected to reach 4.5 percent this year, labor market pressure appears to be easing. Additionally, while household purchasing power has increased—leading to higher spending on travel, food, and restaurants—fear of interest rate hikes is causing consumers to be more cautious regarding large purchases.

Marius Gonsholt Hov, chief economist at Handelsbanken Capital Markets, suggests that Norges Bank may respond to these findings by raising the policy rate to 4.5 percent from the current 4.25 percent. The central bank is scheduled to announce its decision on Thursday, September 24.
