Norochcholai Power Plant cuts output due to critical coal shortages

Sri Lanka’s largest coal-fired power station, the Norochcholai plant, is facing a critical energy crisis as coal reserves have plummeted to dangerously low levels. This shortage has forced the facility to slash its electricity generation capacity from approximately 270 megawatts to just 140 megawatts.

Energy analysts warn that the national power grid is operating at a “razor’s edge,” increasing the risk of power disruptions or load shedding for domestic and industrial consumers. The reduction in coal-based output has necessitated a higher reliance on more expensive oil-based thermal generation to meet demand.

Reports indicate that coal reserves may only last until Friday night, with an emergency shipment expected to arrive on September 4. However, rough sea conditions could delay unloading. The situation has raised concerns regarding procurement planning and the long-term vulnerability of the country’s energy security framework.
