Norovirus identified as cause of Salaspils kindergarten outbreak

Laboratory and epidemiological investigations have identified a norovirus infection as the cause of an outbreak at the ‘Jāņtārpiņš’ kindergarten in Salaspils. Out of 51 tested individuals, including patients and contacts, norovirus was confirmed in 40 cases, representing 78.4% of the tested group.

Since the outbreak began, 92 cases of illness have been registered, including nine adults. The outbreak has affected all groups within the kindergarten. The Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (SPKC) is continuing its investigation and monitoring the situation in cooperation with relevant institutions.

The Food and Veterinary Service (PVD) conducted an inspection of the preschool's catering block immediately after receiving reports of the illnesses. No violations of hygiene requirements were found during this inspection. Additionally, 13 surface swab samples have been sent for laboratory testing, with results still pending.
