Tokat health crisis: 5,000 seek medical help amid norovirus outbreak

An outbreak of gastrointestinal illness in Tokat, Turkey, has led to approximately 5,000 medical consultations since Friday, October 9. Patients have reported symptoms including nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.

Tokat Governor Abdullah Köklü reported that about 70 individuals required inpatient treatment, with 40 discharged and 30 still under medical care. He emphasized that none of the patients are in life-threatening condition. Medical tests have identified norovirus as the infectious agent in some cases.

Authorities are investigating potential water contamination. Water samples from various locations in the city have been sent to the Ankara Public Health Reference Laboratory for analysis. As a precaution, the Governor's Office advised citizens to boil tap water or use bottled water for drinking and food preparation until results are released.

In response to the outbreak, all public and private schools and rehabilitation centers in the Tokat city center were closed on Monday, October 12, to allow for comprehensive disinfection and hygiene measures. Officials have also urged citizens to maintain strict personal hygiene to prevent person-to-person transmission.
