Norsk Folkehjelp rejects US funding, facing major layoffs

Norsk Folkehjelp has rejected approximately 400 million NOK in annual funding from the United States due to new conditions imposed by the Trump administration. The organization stated that the requirements—which include restrictions related to abortion, gender equality, and diversity—conflict with its core values. Secretary General Raymond Johansen emphasized the decision by stating, “We do not trade values for money.”

The loss of funding is expected to result in significant global layoffs, with approximately 1,700 positions at risk worldwide. In Norway, between 40 and 50 employees may lose their jobs. The cuts are expected to impact humanitarian efforts, particularly landmine clearance operations which the organization conducts in seven countries.

MDG politician Eivind Trædal has praised the organization's stance and called on the Norwegian public to help fill the funding gap through private donations, suggesting that the amount could be offset by increased individual contributions.
