Norsk Tipping reaches settlement in lottery drawing error lawsuit
Norsk Tipping and approximately 17,000 Norwegian plaintiffs have reached a settlement agreement following a massive class-action lawsuit. The legal action was initiated after the Norwegian Lottery Authority confirmed that errors had occurred in the drawing processes for Eurojackpot and Lotto Superdraws for nearly ten years.
Rather than receiving direct monetary refunds for their stakes, the settlement proposes compensation through special additional drawings. These new draws aim to restore the winning probabilities that players lost due to the technical errors. The total prize pool for these compensatory draws is set at 3 million NOK for the national Eurojackpot addition and 1 million NOK for the Lotto Superdraw.
Lawyers from the firm SAND, representing the plaintiffs, have recommended that group members accept the settlement, describing it as a “good and reasonable solution” that may even constitute overcompensation compared to the actual economic value of the error. The settlement is subject to approval by the Norsk Tipping board and requires acceptance by at least 90 percent of the claimants to avoid a scheduled trial in August.
