Algeria: Euro fluctuates on parallel market amid trade growth
In Algeria, the Euro is experiencing fluctuations on the parallel currency market. As of early September 2026, the Euro was trading at approximately 276 to 277 Algerian dinars (DZD) at the Square Port-Saïd market in Algiers. This rate significantly exceeds the official rate set by the Banque d’Algérie, which stood at 154.67 DZD per Euro. The parallel market remains the primary source for currency exchange for travelers and the diaspora due to restricted convertibility and limited access to official allocations.
Separately, Afreximbank has highlighted the long-term economic impact of the fourth Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF) held in Algiers in September 2025. The event facilitated nearly $50 billion in transactions, with Algeria capturing over $11 billion of that total. Kanayo Awani, Executive Vice President of Afreximbank, noted that the fair serves as a vital catalyst for intra-African trade, investment, and economic integration, attracting over 112,000 visitors from 132 countries.
