North American bird populations decline by billions since 1970

North American bird populations have experienced a massive decline, with nearly 3 billion birds lost since 1970. According to the 2025 U.S. State of the Birds report, this loss represents approximately one in every four birds.

More than one-third of U.S. bird species are currently of high or moderate conservation concern. This includes 112 “Tipping Point” species that have seen their populations decrease by more than half over the last 50 years. Grassland and aridland species have been particularly affected, losing over 40 percent of their total populations.

Key drivers of these declines include habitat loss and degradation, the use of pesticides, and climate change. The reduction in bird numbers has led to a noticeable decrease in the diversity and volume of birdsong in many regions.
