North American drought triggers hydropower risks and wildfire emergencies
Severe drought and low snowpack levels across North America are creating significant energy and safety challenges. In the United States, record-low water levels in Lake Mead and Lake Powell have hindered the ability of the Hoover and Glen Canyon dams to reach their full 3-gigawatt power capacity. The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation has warned that reservoir elevations may approach minimum power pool thresholds, necessitating shifts in regional energy planning.
In Canada, Hydro-Québec has been forced to curb electricity exports to protect local reserves due to dropping reservoir levels. Simultaneously, extreme drought in British Columbia has fueled explosive wildfire behavior. The Bald Range wildfire near Summerland resulted in the evacuation of over 20,000 people. Economic studies suggest that climate-related disasters, including infrastructure replacement and health impacts from smoke, cost British Columbia between $10.6 billion and $17.1 billion annually.
