North American search engine referrals drop to 12% of publisher pageviews

Search engine referrals to North American publishers fell to 12% of total pageviews in Q3 2026, down from 21% the previous year, according to data from analytics firm Chartbeat. This decline is part of a broader global trend where nine out of ten regions tracked by Chartbeat saw a year-over-year decrease in search engine traffic share.

Central Asia experienced the most significant drop, with search share falling from 53% to 33%. While North America saw a steady erosion over several quarters, Africa was the only region to record an increase, rising from 41% to 46%.

Chartbeat notes that total traffic across its network has remained steady, suggesting that while the share of traffic coming from search engines is shrinking, readers are arriving through other channels rather than disappearing entirely. The shift is attributed in part to AI-powered search tools that provide answers directly to users, reducing the need for external website visits.
