North American summer box office nears all-time record

The North American summer box office is approaching a record-breaking season, currently standing at $4.598 billion. This total places the current season as the second-highest summer on record, trailing only the 2013 season which reached $4.756 billion. To surpass that milestone, the industry requires an additional $158 million in gross revenue.

Key drivers of this season's performance include Sony/Marvel Studios’ ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, which is expected to become only the second film to cross $900 million at the domestic box office, and Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’, which has grossed $563.8 million. Together, these two titles account for nearly 32% of all ticket sales since the first Friday in May.

Other notable performances include the indie release ‘Coyote vs. Acme’ from Warner Bros. Animation, which saw a $15.4 million opening, the largest for its distributor, Ketchup Entertainment. While the season remains competitive, industry analysts suggest the final total may fall slightly short of the 2013 record depending on performance over the Labor Day weekend.
