North Carolina Blue Ribbon Commission proposes major teacher‑pay overhaul

A bipartisan Blue Ribbon Commission on Public Education in North Carolina met virtually on July 27, its fourth session, to draft formal recommendations on teacher compensation and other reforms. The panel, appointed by Governor Josh Stein and legislative leaders, is considering higher teacher pay, a restored recruitment program, expanded pre‑K funding, a consistent statewide reading curriculum, and required summer literacy camps for struggling readers.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Mo Green urged the commission to raise salaries so that both beginning and veteran teachers become the highest paid in the Southeast. Members such as Wake County Schools superintendent Robert Taylor and teacher Lisa Godwin highlighted frozen pay schedules and the need for inflation‑indexed salaries and retention bonuses. The commission plans to vote on its first set of recommendations on Sept. 28, with a revised draft to circulate before an in‑person meeting on Aug. 31.
