North Carolina coaching staff prioritizes deep passing improvements
The North Carolina Tar Heels coaching staff is prioritizing improvements to the team's deep passing game to achieve bowl eligibility this season. Head coach Bill Belichick noted during a recent press conference that the offense requires better execution and vertical production, stating, “We need better execution. We were close on a few plays. We didn't quite have the final production on that we needed.”
To address these deficiencies, the staff has focused on route integrity, design, and the coordination between the passer and route runner. Statistical analysis shows that quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. has struggled with long-distance plays, completing only 40.6 percent of passes exceeding 10 yards. While offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino has utilized quick underneath passes to maintain efficiency in early scripted plays, the team is working to develop a more consistent vertical threat.
