North Carolina counties face flash flood warnings and advisories

Severe weather and heavy rainfall have triggered flash flood warnings and advisories across multiple counties in North Carolina. In several counties, including Buncombe, Henderson, McDowell, Polk, and Rutherford, flash flood warnings were issued due to thunderstorms producing between 2.5 and 4 inches of rain. Specific areas at risk include Lake Lure, Chimney Rock Village, and Bat Cave, where the Rocky Broad River is approaching flood stage.

In northwestern North Carolina, flood advisories remain in effect for Ashe and Watauga counties. Heavy thunderstorms have resulted in 1 to 2 inches of rainfall, with additional amounts expected. This weather is causing minor flooding in low-lying areas, overflowing poor drainage systems, and water over roadways. Affected locations include Jefferson, West Jefferson, Lansing, and Ashland. Numerous streams, such as the North Fork New River and Naked Creek, are expected to see rising water levels.

The National Weather Service advises residents to avoid driving through flooded roads, noting that most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles. Drivers are urged to find alternate routes and exercise extreme caution in hilly terrain where low water crossings may become dangerous during heavy rain.
