North Carolina Democrats Lose House Incumbents and Voter Registrations
Two Democratic incumbents in the North Carolina State House—Nasif Majeed and Carla Cunningham—were defeated in March primaries and subsequently left the Democratic Party to become unaffiliated. Both had drawn criticism for voting with Republicans on key veto‑override measures, including the controversial HB 805 that restricts gender‑affirming care. After his loss, Majeed said, “Our community deserves leadership that is honest, accountable, and respectful of the democratic process.”
At the same time, the state's Democratic Party is facing a steep decline in voter registration. Since the 2024 election, Democrats have lost about 5 % of their registered voters (roughly 81,000), while Republicans added about 37,000 and unaffiliated voters surged by over 230,000, now forming the largest voting bloc. This shift is occurring as former Governor Roy Cooper runs for an open U.S. Senate seat against Republican Michael Whatley, leading in polls 49 % to 41 % among likely voters, but the independent electorate remains decisive.
