North Carolina doctor arrested in interstate road rage shooting

Richard Thomas Arriviello, a 61-year-old physician from Charlotte, North Carolina, was arrested following an alleged road rage shooting on Interstate 77. The incident occurred near the North Carolina-Virginia border around 8:50 a.m. on August 22.

According to Virginia State Police, Arriviello allegedly fired shots from his Mercedes-Benz into a moving Jeep, striking two sisters, aged 12 and 20, in the legs. Both victims were airlifted to a hospital; authorities stated their injuries are not considered life-threatening.

Following the shooting, Arriviello reportedly fled the scene but was located and stopped by troopers approximately 15 miles away. He is currently being held without bond at the New River Valley Regional Jail and faces multiple felony counts, including malicious shooting into an occupied vehicle and maliciously causing bodily injury with intent to maim. He is scheduled to appear in court on September 29.

Medical board records indicate Arriviello has been licensed as an emergency medicine physician in North Carolina since 2010 and is the owner of Family Urgent Care in Monroe. The driver of the Jeep was cited for reckless driving, though their identity has not been released.
