North Carolina focuses on education and workforce development goals
North Carolina is navigating long-term challenges regarding its early childhood education system and workforce development goals. Since 1990, the state has built a complex infrastructure including the Smart Start initiative, a dedicated Division of Child Development, and quality rating systems for childcare. As the system expands to include family economic security and educator compensation, questions regarding sustainable funding remain a primary concern.
Simultaneously, the state is working toward a 2030 goal of having 2 million residents aged 25 to 44 with degrees or industry-recognized credentials. Currently, North Carolina has added less than half of the required qualified residents and still needs approximately 277,000 more to meet the target. To address impending worker shortages, particularly in rural areas for healthcare and manufacturing, the state is relying on community college initiatives and workforce alignment efforts led by organizations such as myFutureNC.
