North Carolina leaders call for permanent end to death penalty

More than 100 organizations, faith leaders, and community groups in North Carolina have issued a joint statement calling for the state to permanently abolish the death penalty. The call comes as the state marks 20 years since its last execution, which occurred on August 18, 2006.

Signatories, including the ACLU of North Carolina and the North Carolina Justice Center, argue that the two-decade hiatus demonstrates that capital punishment is not necessary for community safety, noting that violent crime has decreased during this period. The groups also highlighted that five individuals sentenced to death in the state have since been exonerated and pointed to persistent racial disparities in sentencing.

While North Carolina currently has 122 people on death row and several capital trials scheduled, advocates are pushing to prevent a reversal of this trend following legislative signals such as HB 307.
