North Carolina localities pause data‑center projects amid public backlash

The Charlotte city council halted a newly convened data‑center focus group after staff launched the process without notifying elected officials or the public. City officials said the pause will allow a reassessment of community‑engagement procedures and policy recommendations for regulating data‑center development, which is subject to a 150‑day moratorium approved in June.

In Lee County, about 20 residents addressed the Board of Commissioners to oppose a proposed 300,000‑square‑foot data center on Lower Moncure Road, planned by Virginia‑based PointOne and to be operated by Dallas‑based CyrusOne. Opponents cited concerns over electricity use, water consumption, industrial cooling, possible infrasound effects, and the legitimacy of recent rezoning. The project is projected to generate a $900 million tax base and could begin construction in the fall, with operations slated for 2028 if approved.
