Health officials in North Carolina are investigating a rabies exposure incident involving Farm Adventures, a mobile petting zoo based in Harmony. Between July 28 and August 27, the zoo visited at least 10 locations across several counties, including assisted living facilities, schools, and community events.

Local health departments have evaluated 284 individuals for potential exposure. Of those, 213 people were recommended to receive post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) to prevent the disease, which is typically fatal if symptoms develop. The exposure may have occurred through contact with animal saliva, even without a direct bite.

At least three baby goats from the petting zoo tested positive for rabies, and a fourth was presumed infected; all four animals have since been euthanized. Officials believe the infection may have spread to the goats after a rabid skunk entered their enclosure in late July. The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services is coordinating with local agencies to trace attendees and manage the response.
