North Carolina recovery continues two years after Hurricane Helene

Two years after Hurricane Helene struck Western North Carolina, the region continues to navigate a complex recovery process. The storm caused widespread devastation, including flooding and landslides that resulted in more than 100 deaths.

Economic assessments by the state of North Carolina estimated that the hurricane caused nearly $60 billion in damages and mitigation requirements. However, federal and state funding directed toward recovery has covered approximately $14.4 billion, which represents roughly 24% of the total estimated needs.

While some areas like Lake Lure have reached milestones such as refilling the lake, rural mountain communities continue to struggle. In Chimney Rock, all 45 local businesses were affected and 15 were destroyed, with tourism revenue dropping significantly. Other areas, including Henderson County, face ongoing challenges from landslides and infrastructure damage.
