North Carolina Senate candidate arrested after armed standoff

Jonathan D. Miller, a Libertarian candidate for North Carolina’s 16th Senate District, was arrested following an hours-long standoff with police in Cary. The incident began after authorities conducted a welfare check at Miller’s residence in response to viral social media posts in which he expressed suicidal ideation.

During the encounter, Miller reportedly refused a police order regarding a holstered firearm and fled into wooded terrain. Throughout the pursuit, Miller used social media to live-post updates, including claims that he was armed and positioned defensively. Cary Police Chief Terry Sult stated that Miller was in a “dark place” during the incident.

Miller was eventually taken into custody peacefully without any shots being fired. In communications during the standoff, Miller attributed his actions to a period of intense depression and emotional distress.
