North Carolina State University invents vibrating safety patch for hazardous environments
Researchers at North Carolina State University have created a portable, credit‑card‑sized skin patch that can detect six environmental hazards such as toxic gases and heavy metals. The device integrates a microcontroller, a tiny battery, thin‑film photovoltaic cells for solar charging, and a miniature haptic actuator that delivers distinct vibration patterns on the wearer’s skin to provide immediate warnings.
The work, led by doctoral candidates Baha Erim Uzunoğlu and Oluwatobi Ojuade, also includes an "E‑skin" prototype for robots, allowing machines to sense dangerous substances and avoid them. The research aims to replace delayed smartphone alerts with direct tactile feedback, improving safety for users in hazardous settings.
