North Carolina teenager dies from Naegleria fowleri infection
Moisés Ponce Mendoza, a teenager from the Burlington area of North Carolina, has died following an infection caused by the amoeba Naegleria fowleri, commonly referred to as the ‘brain-eating amoeba’. He passed away on August 31.
According to his family, the symptoms began with severe headaches. After an initial evaluation at a hospital in Burlington, his condition deteriorated rapidly, leading to his transfer to UNC Hospital. There, medical professionals identified the Naegleria fowleri infection. The adolescent remained in a coma while specialists attempted to manage the disease.
The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) confirmed the death and expressed condolences to the family and the community. Naegleria fowleri is a microscopic organism typically found in warm, fresh water bodies like lakes and rivers. It can enter the body through the nose, potentially reaching the brain.
