North Carolina voters face political scams and contested House races

As North Carolina approaches the 2026 midterm elections, voters are encountering a surge in political text message scams. The Better Business Bureau of Eastern Carolinas has warned residents to remain cautious of suspicious messages, fraudulent donation requests, and unsolicited political surveys designed to steal personal information or money. Experts advise voters to avoid clicking links in unsolicited texts and to verify any candidate or organization directly before providing information or funds.

In the Piedmont Triad region, the race for House District 63 has drawn scrutiny regarding Republican candidate Ryan Moffitt. Moffitt, a Burlington attorney, has received endorsements from the NC Chamber, a group that has lobbied against the regulation of toxic chemicals in the state’s drinking water. Critics, including the Southern Environmental Law Center, have noted that such lobbying aligns with legislative efforts like House Bill 402, which limits environmental rulemaking regarding pollutants such as PFAS and 1,4-dioxane.
