North Coast rivers face health advisory due to toxic algal mats

The North Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board has issued a health advisory following the discovery of toxic algal mats in several North Coast rivers. The agency warns that these mats can make both humans and animals sick.

Affected waterways include the Klamath, Trinity, Salmon, Scott, Mad, Eel, South Fork Eel, Van Duzen, Navarro, Russian, and East Fork Russian rivers. While the mats typically grow on riverbeds, they can break loose and float to the surface along shorelines, increasing the risk of contact.

Officials urge visitors to keep children and pets away from the algae and suspect water. Recommended precautions include washing people and pets with clean water after contact, properly cleaning caught fish, and avoiding the use of river water for cooking. If illness occurs after potential exposure, individuals should contact a healthcare provider or veterinarian immediately.
