North Cowichan Council delays Chemainus accessible parking plan

North Cowichan Council has sent a proposal to reconfigure accessible parking in downtown Chemainus back to staff for further consideration. The plan was intended to address concerns that accessible spaces in the Waterwheel Park parking lot become unavailable during events, such as the weekly summer Wednesday Market.

The staff recommendation suggested relocating two accessible stalls from the Waterwheel Park lot to Waterwheel Crescent, in front of the Chemainus Valley Museum. This would have involved converting the two existing accessible stalls in the Waterwheel lot into three regular parking spaces and turning two regular spaces in front of the museum into 15-minute passenger loading zones.

Councillor Chris Istace opposed the current proposal, questioning whether the new locations would be too far from essential services. Istace suggested moving an accessible space further north on Willow Street to be closer to the bank, post office, and pharmacy, noting that proximity to these services is vital for those with mobility challenges.
