North Holland officials to reconsider Noorder IJ-plas wind turbines

The North Holland Provincial Council is set to reconsider the installation of three controversial wind turbines near the Noorder IJ-plas on September 7. The decision follows a court ruling that overturned previous decisions regarding the wind farm, which is located on Amsterdam territory near Zaandam and Oostzaan.

The court found that the province had failed to sufficiently explain why traffic safety around Coenplein outweighed the interests of the wind turbines. Consequently, provincial representatives must now re-evaluate the balance between traffic safety and renewable energy goals, incorporating new information into their assessment.

The project remains a point of contention. Local residents, including those living on houseboats near Zijkanaal H, have protested against the turbines due to concerns regarding noise and shadow flicker. Conversely, Amsterdam supports the wind farm as a means to meet climate targets and increase sustainable energy production.
