North Holland province unveils draft spatial vision for 2030‑2050

The Province of North Holland released a draft environmental vision on 10 June 2026 outlining goals for land use up to 2030 and 2050. The plan, described as a “compass for provincial policy”, balances housing, nature, agriculture, energy and accessibility. It proposes that new housing be built primarily within existing towns and villages near public transport to preserve open landscapes.

The vision also emphasizes a strong, sustainable economy and expands the energy transition, allocating space for generation, storage and infrastructure while protecting water quality and soil. Climate‑adaptation measures such as increased water storage and biodiversity enhancements are included. The draft, together with an environmental impact report, is open for public comment from 15 June to 31 August 2026; submitted views will be considered in a final note before the Provincial States adopt the definitive vision in December 2026. Deputy Esther Rommel said the document will guide decisions on urbanisation, energy transition and climate resilience.
