North Jutland reveals Viking Age traces and Crusader history

Archaeological and historical discoveries are drawing attention to North Jutland, Denmark. At Hellevad Church, a rare Romanesque granite gravestone featuring a Latin inscription dating between 1096 and 1250 suggests a Crusader may be buried there. Local enthusiast Michael Kristensen is hosting an event regarding Templar Knights and Crusaders, utilizing a complete set of Templar armor to explore the motivations and lives of medieval farmers from Vendsyssel who traveled to the Holy Land.

In a separate discovery near Asdal, excavations led by the Vendsyssel Historical Museum have uncovered traces of Viking Age settlements. Following metal detector finds by assistant Michael Ejstrup Nielsen, archaeologists excavated an area between a former parish farm and Asdal Hovedgaard. The dig revealed several buildings, including a 'grubehus'—a pit house used as a weaving hut during the Viking Age—confirming long-standing historical interest in the site.
