North Kivu faces armed attack and major fire

In the North Kivu province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, two separate incidents have caused significant distress to local populations.

In the Walikale territory, a major fire broke out in Makana during the night of August 29, 2026. The blaze, reportedly caused by a discarded cigarette, destroyed over 50 homes as well as several hotels, shops, pharmacies, and restaurants. Dr. Akilimali Bamwisho Descartes, the sector chief of Wanianga, visited the site to assess damages. Local authorities have pledged 1,000 metal sheets and a chainsaw from sector funds to begin reconstruction efforts for the displaced families.

In the Rutshuru territory, an armed attack occurred in the village of Ndwali near Vitshumbi on the night of August 31 to September 1, 2026. Four civilians were killed and approximately ten others were injured. While the exact perpetrators have not been independently confirmed, local reports suggest involvement by either M23 rebels, self-defense groups, or FDLR fighters. The attack took place in a region near Virunga National Park known for high tensions and the presence of various armed groups.
