North Kivu transporters strike over Butembo-Manguredjipa road decay
Transport workers on the Butembo-Manguredjipa axis in North Kivu province have launched a two-week strike to protest severe road deterioration. The suspension of activities, which began on October 4, 2026, affects all vehicles traveling the route, a critical corridor for agricultural goods.
Protesters highlighted several critical points, including Kiragho, the Lenguhe bridge, Bustoro, and the Nziapanda-Manguredjipa section. Katembo Kinywa, president of the transporters, noted that the poor road conditions have led to accidents and financial losses due to destroyed cargo. Civil society groups have supported the strike, citing rising transport costs and the increasing price of essential goods.
The road is currently assigned to the Société de Services Vihumbira (SSV). A spokesperson for the company stated that maintenance work is ongoing, with teams currently focused on rehabilitating the bridge at Byambwe.
