North Korea and China react to reduced U.S.-South Korea military drills

North Korea has responded to U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to significantly reduce the scale of annual military exercises with South Korea, stating that the reduction does not change the provocative nature of the drills. Kim Yo Jong, sister of Kim Jong Un, stated through state media that while the duration and scope may decrease, the aggressive intent remains unchanged. She also denied any current communication between her brother and Trump, despite Trump expressing a willingness to meet with the North Korean leader.

Simultaneously, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has urged South Korea to maintain strategic autonomy and avoid taking sides between major powers like the U.S. and China. During meetings with South Korean officials, Wang emphasized that lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula requires addressing the root causes of conflict and ending hostile U.S. policies toward North Korea. This diplomatic push comes as the U.S. seeks to scale back military cooperation with Seoul to reduce costs and maintain rapport with Kim Jong Un.
