North Korean leader Kim Jong Un attended the commissioning ceremony of the Kang Kon, a new 5,000-ton-class destroyer, at Wonsan Port. Kim stated that the vessel is an offensive warship that will serve as a key component of the nation’s state nuclear response system, capable of delivering “annihilating retaliatory strikes” against enemies.

The Kang Kon is the second vessel of its class to enter service, following the Choe Hyon destroyer commissioned approximately three months ago. The ship’s deployment to the waters east of the Korean Peninsula is intended to signal North Korea’s intent to exercise sovereignty at sea and underwater. The vessel previously faced technical difficulties, including a partial capsize during a launch attempt in May 2025.

During the ceremony, Kim Jong Un emphasized the need to transform the navy into a nuclear-armed force to enhance maritime defense and war deterrence. He also announced that construction of new naval bases is underway on the country's east coast and promised that another stage of North Korea’s naval buildup would be demonstrated in eight months.
