North Korea slams Japan’s 2026 Defense White Paper
North Korea has issued sharp condemnations against Japan’s 2026 Defense White Paper, labeling the document a “reinvasion-minded” plan designed to legitimize Tokyo’s military expansion. Through the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Pyongyang argued that Japan is using groundless claims about North Korean strategic threats to justify a reckless arms buildup.
This escalation follows recent warnings from Kim Yo Jong, who suggested North Korea might adopt “additional military options” in response to Japan’s military modernization and the testing of U.S.-made Tomahawk cruise missiles. In a show of force, North Korea recently launched a short-range ballistic missile toward the waters between the two nations.
Separately, in Japan, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is reportedly considering not visiting the Yasukuni Shrine this August 15th to avoid straining relations with South Korea and China. Meanwhile, internal friction is growing within Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party, as senior members criticize Takaichi’s proposed consumption tax cuts as populist measures lacking sufficient funding.
