North Korea denounces upcoming U.S.-South Korea military drills
North Korea has denounced upcoming U.S.-South Korean military exercises, labeling them more provocative than previous years. According to state media KCNA, Pyongyang views the growing military cooperation between the United States, Japan, and South Korea as the formation of a nuclear alliance.
In response, North Korea stated it would strengthen its nuclear deterrence to meet what it describes as a new level of threat. The North Korean Foreign Ministry also accused the United States of pursuing a nuclear strategy that lowers the threshold for weapon use, warning that such actions could push global security toward the brink of nuclear war.
The annual Ulchi Freedom Shield (UFS) joint military drills are scheduled to take place from August 17 to 27. These exercises will include specialized training to counter drones, cyberattacks, and GPS disruption as part of an effort to adapt to evolving regional capabilities.
