North Korea threatens response to upcoming U.S.-South Korea military drills

North Korea has issued strong warnings against the upcoming Ulchi Freedom Shield (UFS) military exercises, scheduled to take place from August 17 to 27. Pyongyang described the joint U.S.-South Korean drills as a “rehearsal for an aggressive war” and claimed they are more provocative than previous years.

The North Korean Foreign Ministry stated that the country would respond to this “new level of threat” with a “new level of a deterrent,” asserting its right to legitimate self-defense. Additionally, North Korea accused the United States of pursuing a nuclear strategy that lowers the threshold for weapon use and claimed that military cooperation between the U.S., Japan, and South Korea is evolving into a “nuclear alliance.”

The U.S. and South Korean militaries have characterized the exercises as defensive in nature, aimed at strengthening readiness and regional stability. The drills are expected to involve approximately 18,000 South Korean troops and 28,500 U.S. military personnel. This year's training will focus on modern warfare capabilities, including exercises to counter drones, cyberattacks, and GPS disruption.
