North Korea expands nuclear material production with new facility

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un inspected a newly commissioned plant for producing nuclear material on 3 June 2026. The facility, equipped with advanced technology, marks a significant step in the country's effort to double its capacity for weapons‑grade material over the past five years.

Kim said the expansion is essential for strengthening the nation’s nuclear deterrent amid what he described as growing security threats. South Korea’s joint chiefs of staff identified the site as a uranium enrichment plant, while the country’s UN envoy reiterated that North Korea will remain a nuclear state irrespective of external pressure and will not return to the Nuclear Non‑Proliferation Treaty.

Officials were directed to increase overall production in line with long‑term strategic goals, including plans to boost uranium output and further develop nuclear technology.
