North Korea expands nuclear weapons production with new facility

North Korea announced on June 5 that it has built a new plant to produce fuel for nuclear weapons, describing the facility as using "more advanced technology" but providing no details on its location or operational timeline. State news agency KCNA said the plant could enrich uranium to weapons grade.

Kim Jong-un visited the site on June 3, reporting that the country's weapons‑grade nuclear material capacity has more than doubled over the past five years. He ordered officials to continue expanding the stockpile at an exponential rate, emphasizing the need to boost both the quality and quantity of the nuclear deterrent amid rising security threats.
