North Korea launches ballistic missiles toward Sea of Japan

North Korea launched what are believed to be ballistic missiles toward the Sea of Japan around 6:00 AM on August 12, 2026. According to the Japanese Ministry of Defense, the projectiles likely fell outside of Japan’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi issued directives to relevant government agencies to maintain a state of readiness for unforeseen circumstances. The instructions include prioritizing information collection and analysis, providing rapid and accurate information to the public, and ensuring the safety of aircraft and vessels.

South Korean military officials reported that the missiles were launched from the vicinity of Wonsan in eastern North Korea. The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff have increased monitoring and vigilance in preparation for potential additional launches. This event follows a short-range ballistic missile launch by North Korea six days prior.
