North Korea launches short-range ballistic missiles toward Sea of Japan
North Korea launched approximately 10 short-range ballistic missiles toward the Sea of Japan on August 20, 2026. According to the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff, the missiles were fired from the Pyongyang area.
The Japan Maritime Safety Agency issued warnings to vessels to monitor for falling debris. While Japan confirmed the launch, NHK reported that the objects likely landed outside Japan's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
This military activity occurs as the United States and South Korea conclude their annual 'Ulchi Freedom Shield' joint exercises. The scale of these exercises was recently reduced following requests from the U.S. administration to avoid perceived hostile signaling. In response, Kim Yo Jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, stated that the reduction in exercise scale does not change the 'provocative and aggressive nature' of the activities.
