North Korea nuclear arsenal estimates clash amid rising Russia ties

Discrepancies have emerged regarding the scale of North Korea’s nuclear arsenal. While Donald Trump has suggested Pyongyang possesses 57 powerful nuclear weapons, South Korean defense officials have informed Parliament that the actual number could be as high as 120 warheads.

Geopolitical tensions are rising as North Korea seeks international recognition of its status as a nuclear state. While the U.S. has explored transactional diplomacy—including potential economic incentives like reopening the Kaesong Industrial Complex or phased sanctions relief—Pyongyang has shown little interest in denuclearization. Instead, the regime has labeled South Korea a ‘hostile state’ and recently conducted short-range ballistic missile tests in protest of U.S.-South Korean military exercises.

Furthermore, the security implications extend to Europe. Reports indicate a deepening military partnership between North Korea and Russia, with Pyongyang providing millions of artillery shells and ballistic missiles to support Russian operations in Ukraine. Intelligence suggests North Korean missile units may be deploying in Russian regions to facilitate strikes against Ukraine. Additionally, the construction of a road bridge between Russia and North Korea is reportedly underway to bolster military supply lines.
