Kim Yo-jong rebuffs ASEAN denuclearisation demand, vows continual nuclear upgrades

Kim Yo-jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and a senior official of the Workers’ Party, issued a statement through the Korean Central News Agency rejecting the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) joint declaration that called for the "complete denuclearisation" of the Korean Peninsula. She called the ASEAN stance "stupid and foolish" and a "failure of strategic thinking and logic," insisting that North Korea’s nuclear deterrent is "the ultimate shield for national sovereignty" and that the country’s nuclear capability will be “steadily updated without a momentary stagnation.”

The statement also warned the forum not to become a “hired mouthpiece for the United States.” North Korea, which enshrined its nuclear‑armed status in its 2023 constitution, continues to develop nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles despite United Nations Security Council sanctions. The ARF joint statement was released after the forum’s annual foreign‑ministers meeting in Manila, which North Korea did not attend.

Kim Yo-jong’s remarks underscore Pyongyang’s refusal to entertain any denuclearisation demands and its intention to maintain an irreversible nuclear posture.
