North Korea rejects IAEA resolution and affirms irreversible nuclear status

North Korea has rejected a resolution by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that criticized its nuclear weapons program. The North Korean Foreign Ministry stated that its status as a nuclear power is irreversible and legally established by its supreme law, noting that the country is not a member of the IAEA or the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

Kim Yo Jong, sister of leader Kim Jong Un, accused the IAEA of double standards, claiming the agency ignores nuclear proliferation activities by the United States and South Korea's plans for nuclear-powered submarines while targeting North Korea's self-defensive activities. She suggested the agency's biased viewpoint contributes to the collapse of the international non-proliferation system.

Separately, state media reported that Kim Jong Un conducted a three-day inspection of major munitions factories to modernize defense capabilities. Analysts suggest North Korea is overhauling its military with assistance from Russia following a 2024 mutual defense treaty, potentially aided by combat experience gained in Ukraine.
