North Korea stops unauthorized 2026 World Cup broadcast after FIFA complaint

North Korean state television, Central Television, aired short clips of the 2026 FIFA World Cup without permission, allegedly receiving satellite feeds from neighboring countries such as China. The broadcast showed excerpts from group‑stage matches, including Ivory Coast vs Ecuador and Germany vs Curaçao, with a on‑screen label reading “FIFA 2026 World Cup Group Stage”. After South Korean media reported the piracy, the channel halted the transmission on June 19.

FIFA confirmed it had not granted broadcasting rights to North Korea for the tournament. The regime had previously been warned in early 2024 following an unauthorized airing of the 2023 Women’s World Cup, and South Korean broadcasters are not providing rights for the 2026 event. This marks the latest in a series of illicit broadcasts dating back to the 2002 World Cup.
