North Korea strengthens ties with Russia amid death of key military official

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has sent a message to Russian President Vladimir Putin, stating that the two nations are writing a “new chapter in their great alliance history.” In response to a congratulatory message from Putin regarding the 78th anniversary of the regime's founding, Kim expressed a firm commitment to expanding military, economic, and cultural cooperation between the two countries.

Kim also reaffirmed North Korea's support for Russia in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, stating his “firm confidence” in a Russian victory and promising unwavering support for the Russian people. This follows the signing of a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty between the two nations in June 2024.

Separately, North Korea has announced the death of Yoon Dong-hyun, a high-ranking military official and key figure in the country's nuclear and missile development programs. Yoon, a former Vice Minister of the People's Armed Forces, was a close aide to Kim Jong Un, frequently accompanying him during inspections of military technology and missile tests. Kim Jong Un expressed his condolences following Yoon's passing.
